Good Monday morning, January 5th. Welcome to 2026. Light snow and bitterly cold today, a wind chill feeling minus 24. Right now, minus 15 feels minus 17. The dollar 72.58 cents U.S. I'm Stacey Englehart. Tragedy on the weekend, a fire broke out at an apartment building in the Saint-Sauver neighborhood Saturday, leaving one person dead. Authorities were called late in the afternoon, declared the fire under control just after 7.30 on Sunday. Police said it was treated as a suspicious death. The investigation continues. As several countries condemned the weekend ouster of Venezuela's president by the U.S., protesters in Ottawa were calling on the federal government to support the right to self-determination for the Venezuelan people and for the U.S. to back away. The U.S. has expressed interest in running that country. The military operation also left stranded tourists after the FAA temporarily closed airspace over the Caribbean. Prime Minister Kearney is in Paris today for a meeting with Ukraine's allies to try and end Russia's war. The meeting between Canada, France and other European countries seeks to accelerate a peace plan for Ukraine nearly four years after Russia invaded. Kearney said his focus remains on fortifying Ukraine and deterring future Russian aggression. And one of Quebec's first babies of the new year was born right at the stroke of midnight. The Regional Health Authority for the Monterey G West region announced that baby Anaya was born at exactly midnight and that she and her mother are doing well. In Montreal, baby Sophia was born at 12.46 in the morning, while another baby girl, Adeline, was born at 2.53 in Chateau Gay. Light 1067 Sports, Canada's potential medal at this year's World Juniors will not be gold. They lost in the semi-finals to Czechia 6-4 and now play Finland for bronze this afternoon 4.30. Czechia plays Sweden in the gold medal game starting at 8.30 this morning. NHL last night, Montreal edged Dallas 4-3 in overtime. They host Calgary Wednesday, 730. PWHL Montreal beat Minnesota in OT3-2. NFL winners include Pittsburgh, Denver, Atlanta, Cleveland, the Giants, Minnesota, Houston, Jacksonville, the LA Rams, Detroit, New England, Buffalo, Washington, Las Vegas, marking the end of the regular season.
