It arrived early yesterday morning and coincided with events across the country yesterday to mark the 30th National Indigenous Peoples Day. Floodwaters began receding in parts of southern Quebec after intense rainfall overwhelmed communities in Montreal's West Island and South Shore. Environment Canada said some areas received up to 150 millimeters of rain within just a few hours, flooding hundreds of homes and forcing emergency crews into action. Firefighters continued checking on neighborhoods while power outages and travel disruptions gradually improved. A lightning alert temporarily shut down operations at Montreal's Trudeau Airport. Montreal's police chief will meet with city officials behind closed doors over racism allegations involving officers in the city's Montreal North Borough. Elected municipal officials had originally been scheduled to review the Montreal Police Department's annual report at a public meeting. Last week, the police force removed 16 officers from patrol, including two who were suspended and under criminal investigation over racist and discriminatory allegations. On Saturday, Quebec's domestic security minister appointed a lawyer as an independent observer. While Montreal's mayor called for a public inquiry, the Quebec premier said she is open but wants the investigation completed first. And a small town west of Montreal decided to officially recognize trees as living beings with rights of their own. The resolution adopted by Terrace Foudreau, June 9th, said trees deserve protection and have the right to live, grow, and regenerate. According to the mayor, the community was inspired to act after viewing a film by Quebec filmmaker Andre Des Rochers. The decision means the town will likely have to consider the impact of trees when they write bylaws or make decisions. Light 1067 Sports. Blue Jays game was rained out yesterday.
