It's Thursday, June 25th. Good morning. Sunshine today, a slight chance of showers, but a humidex feeling almost 30. Right now it's 18, the dollar, 70.23 cents U.S. I'm Stacey Englehart. Well, Canada lost, but still advances in the World Cup. We'll have the latest coming up in sports. Venezuela under a state of emergency after two powerful earthquakes struck within a minute of each other. Officials say the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 quakes damaged buildings, disrupted services and forced people into the streets. The country's main airport has been closed while schools, subway service and parts of the natural gas network have been shut. Authorities report injuries and trapped residents. Police continue to investigate the background and possible motives of the man accused in Monday's deadly Montreal shooting. Officer Mohamed Ben-Radouan, bystander Michel Mizrahi, and the alleged gunman were killed. Authorities are reviewing the so-called manifesto of the suspect's online activity. Experts warn against drawing conclusions. A Montreal man convicted earlier this year in a fraudulent weight loss product scam in the U.S. has been sentenced to three years in prison. Michel Poirier pleaded guilty in March for his role in a mass marketing fraud scheme from 2011 through 2016. It said Poirier would use American printing companies to handle the mass of brochures. but then give them bad checks. Consumers were also conned into purchasing the weight loss products, and they were defrauded out of more than 1.2 million. Light 1067 sports baseball yesterday, the Jays lost to Houston 3-1. They start up a weekend home series against Texas tonight at 7. World Cup soccer yesterday, Canada lost to Switzerland 2-1. Elsewhere, Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Qatar 3-1. It was Morocco over Haiti. Brazil blank Scotland. South Africa surprised South Korea 1-0. And Mexico blank Czechia 3-0. Canada faces South Africa on Sunday in LA in the round of 32. Now games today include Curacao and Ivory Coast at 4, Germany also plays Ecuador at 4, the two 7 o'clock games, Tunisia and the Netherlands, Sweden, and Japan. And tonight at 10, the U.S. plays Turkey and is Paraguay in Australia. In the WNBA tonight, the Toronto Tempo hosts LA at 7. In the CFL, Edmonton is in Winnipeg at 8.30.
