Residents are calling for an independent public investigation into allegations of racism and misconduct involving Montreal police officers. as the police chief defends his handling of the scandal. Police dismantled the 16-member Montreal Nord unit in June after allegations of racist and abusive conduct by some officers. The chief answered questions at a public meeting last night provided a timeline of the police response. He said the force first learned in March of the alleged racist behavior involving police at the station through internal reports and immediately launched an investigation. Three officers have been suspended. A former RCMP officer filing a complaint against two Quebec police services for racial profiling. Morris Carvey said he was smoking outside a restaurant in Longuay on the south shore of Montreal when an officer approached and asked him for his ID. When he refused, he said he was surrounded by 11 officers who told him he was violating A municipal smoking bylaw. So police threw him to the ground and cuffed him. Sky watchers in Quebec and beyond being treated to a meteor shower and partial solar eclipse this week. According to the Astrolab Astronomy Center in Quebec, the Perseid meteor shower has been raining down since yesterday, will continue through Friday, but peak viewing is tonight from 11 o'clock till dawn. The debris stream will combine with a partial solar eclipse and create a rare celestial alignment that begins just before 1 this afternoon. People in Atlantic Canada will see the highest amount of sun coverage followed by those in eastern Quebec, parts of Europe will experience a total solar eclipse.
